Ronald Koeman on Xavi Simons: ‘He is developing fantastically at his club, I’m very happy that we have a player like Xavi in the Dutch national team’

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman is delighted with the season that Xavi Simons is having in Germany with RB Leipzig. The 20-year-old has taken the fantastic form that he started with PSV last season to an even higher level. So far this season, Simons has found the back of the net six times and provided eight assists in just 18 appearances across all competitions.

Remarkably, Xavi Simons is yet to score in nine international matches for the Netherlands. ‘Of course everyone wants to score goals,’ Koeman told the media on Friday. ‘But he is developing fantastically at his club. That indicates that there is a great future for him. I do not agree that Xavi is less successful in the Dutch national team. Of course he has some bad moments in matches, but I’m very happy that we have a player like Xavi in the Dutch national team.’

Simons made his national team debut at the World Cup in Qatar last year under Louis van Gaal. The forward featured towards the end of his country’s 3-1 win over the USA. Xavi Simons has started in all eight international matches that he’s played in this calendar year.
