Dutch national team manager Ronald Koeman is very shocked by Ajax’s current run of poor form. In a press conference on Monday, the former Ajax and Barcelona boss revealed that he’s surprised by how badly things are going in Amsterdam. Still, he did not want to give an opinion on their manager, Maurice Steijn.
Ajax are 16th in the Eredivisie table, having won just one of their opening six games this season. On Sunday, the Dutch giants suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to AZ Alkmaar. Ahead of the Netherlands national team’s matches against France and Greece, Ronald Koeman was asked why he selected Ajax players in his squad. According to Voetbal International, the 60-year-old said ‘It’s not pleasant to be there right now. But I didn’t notice anything. For example, I see that Brobbey is and looks fitter than he was last season. And Bergwijn is a player who has always delivered what I expected from him.’
Koeman went on to give his thoughts on the current situation at Ajax, saying ‘’It’s crazy what happens there, how everything works there. I am shocked by the level. If AZ, with all the problems they have had – losing players – wins so easily… Then you have fallen very far.’
Ronald Koeman did not want to say anything about Maurice Steijn during the press conference. ‘I have no opinion about that. The situation there is just very difficult at the moment.’ Koeman would advise to first set things up properly at the back. ‘If there are problems within your team, you must first start at the back to ensure that you do not give away any space.’
