Het Nieuwsblad have revealed that Romelu Lukaku could return to Anderlecht as soon as 2026. The Belgian record goal scorer has always maintained that he would like to end his career with his former side, and it is now being reported that the striker thinks a move following the 2026 World Cup would be ideal. This will certainly be music to the ears of Anderlecht fans given the strikers incredible record at both national and international level.
part of the reason that Lukaku is eyeing a return sooner than many would have expected is that he wants to return with enough left in the tank to have an impact. The striker would be 33-years-old at that point and should still have enough left in the tank to terrorize Pro League defenders. In 98 games for the club as a teenager Lukaku scored 41 goals, before moving on to Chelsea. He is currently at Napoli, where he remains under contract until 2027. This could be a stumbling block in the return and it is not yet known how the Italian side will respond to Lukaku’s request. In 30 games for the title chasing Serie A side the forward has scored 11 goals.
