Roefs delighted at Sunderland: โ€œThe way itโ€™s turned out is fantasticโ€

Robin Roefs is having a dream start to his Premier League career at Sunderland. The goalkeeper immediately became the first-choice goalkeeper, impressed in his first matches, and even received his first call-up to the Dutch national team.

Itโ€™s been a great few weeks for the goalkeeper. In his first three matches, heโ€™s kept one clean sheet and also saved a penalty. โ€œI think Iโ€™ve shown my mettle when I needed to. The start of the season couldnโ€™t have been better,โ€ he told ESPN at the Dutch national teamโ€™s training camp.

โ€œSome people had already written Sunderland off at the start of the season. They might have thought: itโ€™s nice to have them there, but we wonโ€™t see them again. But I think the club has made some very good signings.โ€

In total, Sunderland spent over โ‚ฌ190 million (ยฃ162.3m) this summer. Besides Roefs, Brian Brobbey and Lutsharel Geertruida, among others, also joined the newly promoted team.

After a fine start to the season, the goalkeeper was called up to join the Dutch national team. And thatโ€™s still a bit surreal at times. โ€œA few months ago, I might not have fully believed this. I expected a move, but how it turned out is fantastic. Iโ€™m still young for a goalkeeper, so I knew there would be interest. But the way it turned out is fantastic.โ€

Roefs could make his debut for the Dutch national team on Thursday. Oranje host Poland at De Kuip, before Sunday sees Ronald Koemanโ€™s team play an away match in Lithuania.
