Roberto Martinez will leave Romelu Lukaku out of the World Cup squad if striker is not fit for at least one group game

Roberto Martinez has said that Red Devils all time top scorer Romelu Lukaku is in danger of being left out of the World Cup squad. As reported by Sporza, Martinez said “Right now, Lukaku is not ready to play. If he doesn’t get fit to compete in one of the three group matches, I won’t select him”.

The Inter Milan striker was out for two months with a hamstring injury, which struck again at the end of October as he missed the games against Bayern Munich and Juventus. Martinez wants the striker to be able to play in at least one of the group matches, which if possible will mean that Lukaku will be part of the squad announced on Thursday. Lukaku has been allowed to return to Belgium by the Serie A club as he looks to get fit in time for the tournament.

Lukaku has scored 68 goals in 102 internationals, making him Belgium’s all time record goal scorer. The Red Devils fans will be hoping Lukaku is fit enough to play in the group matches against Canada, Morocco and Croatia. This will be the last tournament for many of Belgium’s golden generation.
