Roberto Martinez to step down as Belgian head coach following World Cup exit

Following the Red Devils exit from the World Cup after a 0-0 draw with Croatia, Roberto Martinez has announced that he will be stepping down as head coach. Martinez stated that he planned to step down after the 2022 tournament in Qatar regardless of the results.

Belgium needed a win to qualify for the knock-out stages, but were denied thanks to some late heroics from Croatia’s Josko Gvardiol that denied Romelu Lukaku.

Martinez took charge of the Red Devils in August of 2016. During his tenure, the side reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, where they were beaten by eventual winners France. However, outside of this success, the Golden Generation under Martinez failed to reach a major final. In Euro 2020 they were knocked out again by the side who would go on to win the competition, Italy. Unfortunately for Martinez, his six year tenure in charge of the national side ended with a poor World Cup campaign in Qatar.
