Roberto Martinez still prepared to start Edin Hazard over Leandro Trossard at the World Cup, despite a lack of playing time for Real Madrid

In an interview with HLN, Roberto Martinez was asked about the prospects of Edin Hazard starting for the Red Devils at the 2022 World Cup. Martinez was asked about the prospects of Brighton star Leandro Trossard, who could potentially take the place of Hazard. Martinez said “Leandro Trossard is rightly spoken of, but there can be no discussion about the importance of Eden to the national team, with his career and experience. He was one of the key players in 2018”.

Martinez was keen to state that it is unlikely that, due to his lack of match time in Spain, Hazard will be able to play three games in a short period of time. This is where Trossard may well get his chance. However, Hazard has been stating his desire for more game time at Real.

It is unlikely that Pro League stars Bryan Heynen or Mike Tresor will get a call up. In the same interview, Martinez stated that he is likely to stick with the players he knows, and that the likes of Tresor and Heynen are probably relying on injuries to other players in order to be on the plane to Qatar.
