Roberto Martinez: Everton’s Amadou Onana is “like a young Patrick Vieira”

Belgian manager Roberto Martinez says that new Everton signing Amadou Onana is “like a young Patrick Vieira.”

Onana has just joined Everton from Lille for a fee believed to be around €40 million, and it’s a signing that has excited many of the English club’s fans.

Martinez, their former manager, has first-hand experience of the 20-year-old midfielder having selected him for the Belgian national team earlier this year, rates him very highly, and is backing him to succeed.

“In Belgium we are enthusiastic,” he told Sky Sports.

“Amadou has already played in Germany and in France. Lille also paid a large sum for him – so he knows how to deal with the pressure.

“His intensity, how he can put pressure, how easily he gets into the sixteen: he looks like a young Patrick Vieira in how to float the ball.”

Onana could well make his debut for his new club at the weekend, in their match against Aston Villa.
