Roberto Martinez says he’s never seen a young player do as well on their debut as Zeno Debast did in Belgium’s win over Wales.
After being included in the Belgium squad for the first time, the Anderlecht defender was then included in the starting lineup for the match against Wales, which his nation won 2-1.
He was praised by many for how he performed on his debut, and the manager said it was the best he’d ever seen from a player so young.
“This was one of the most impressive debuts for the Red Devils in recent years,” he said.
“I have never seen such a young player make his debut so well. I enjoyed it. I saw a young guy with a lot of self-confidence, but also a lot of desire to learn.”
Debast was pleased with how he did, but admitted he was initially overwhelmed.
“It was a bit overwhelming,” he said.
“Especially with that atmosphere in the stadium. Initially we found it difficult to find the solutions, but after that it went better and I came into the game better myself. [Toby] Alderweireld and [Jan] Vertonghen coached me well.”
