Roberto Martinez admits Canada were better than Belgium after 1-0 win

Following his side’s 1-0 win over Canada, Roberto Martinez was full of praise for his Northern American opponents. Speaking to the media post match, Martinez said “Canada were better than us in what they wanted to do”.

Martinez went on to say he was happy with the win, especially winning when not playing well. Belgium were fortunate to come away from their opening game of the World Cup with a clean sheet, after Canada missed an early penalty and failed to convert any of their 20 plus shots.

The deciding goal came from Fenerbahçe striker Michy Batshuayi grabbed the only goal of the game late in the first half. Batshuayi was starting upfront ahead of record goal scorer Romelu Lukaku, who is still touch and go for when he will be able to return to the line-up, with the expectation being the final game against Croatia. However, Martinez did say prior to the game against Canada that there was a possibility that the Inter striker could be back for the game against Morocco.

If Belgium win their next fixture against Morocco, they will already be through to the next round of the competition with a game to spare.
