HBVL are reporting that Rihito Yamamoto of Gamba Osaka is having a medical with Sint-Truiden today. The 21-year-old central midfielder looks set to be the latest player to leave the J-League to join the Belgian side that have Japanese owners. Yamamoto began his career with Tokyo Verdy before joining Gamba in the summer of 2022. With just a year left on his current deal, it appears that he has left Japan to play in Europe.
Yamamoto made over 100 appearances for Tokyo Verdy, scoring three goals and providing four assists. At Gamba Osaka, he made 17 appearances and provided two assists. 11 of those appearances came during the 2023 season.
Yamamoto looks set to join a number of new signings at Sint-Truiden. Defensively, they have brought in Bruno Godeau and Frederic Ananou. They also loaned another player from the J-League in Japanese international full-back Ryoya Ogawa, who has joined from FC Tokyo for the 2023/2024 season. Sint-Truiden do have a purchase option for Ogawa.
