Return of the ‘Little Prince’: Franky Vercauteren returns to Belgian Red Devils as Technical Director

Alongside the announcement of Domenico Tedesco as the new Belgian national team head coach, the Belgian FA have also confirmed the appointment of Franky Vercauteren as technical director. Previously, Roberto Martinez had been employed to take on both head coach and technical director role, but after his departure the jobs have been split. Vercauteren has vowed to work in the background and allow Tedesco to be the coach and make on field decisions.

Vercauteren, who was nicknamed the Little Prince during his playing days, was the head coach of the Belgian national team back in 2009. After leaving the Red Devils Vercatueren went on to manage a number of clubs, include Genk, Anderlecht, Antwerp and Sporting Lisbon.

The Belgian FA have spent a few months looking for a replacement to Roberto Martinez after a poor Qatar World Cup campaign in which the Red Devils crashed out in the group stages. For many, this was the final swan song of the Golden Generation. Now its time for Tedesco and Vercatueren to usher in a new era for Belgian football.
