As per Voetbal International, Willem II’s intended signing of Maxim Kireev will not take place. After agreeing on a deal in January to join this summer, the Bulgarian international will not go to Tilburg after the side were recently relegated in their playoff double header against Telstar.
Frustratingly for the demoted Tricolores, a clause in Kireev’s contract means the 20-year-old Lierse SK man won’t transfer – even after taking official pictures in the club’s kit.
“That’s right”, Freek Heerkens said two days after the lost final against Telstar. The contract termination has to do with Willem II’s relegation to the Keuken Kampioen Divisie. “We don’t want to take any financially irresponsible risks. We can’t spend such a large amount of money in the KKD situation.”
Tom Caluwé, Heerkens’ predecessor, was responsible for the intended arrival of Kireev. The attacking midfielder signed a contract until mid-2029 four months ago, but will not be showing his skills in the second tier. It is not yet known where Kireev’s future lies.
