Rangersโ€™ Dessers does not rule out a romantic Belgian return

Cyriel Dessers and Rangers face Club Brugge in the Champions League qualification play-off this evening. An interesting narrative comes with the fact that the Blauw-Zwart have tried to sign him several times. Dessers recently revealed that a return to Belgium is something that heโ€™s open to, and is something that has nearly materialised over recent seasons.

Dessers was Rangersโ€™ top scorer last season with 29 goals in all competitions. This attracted considerable interest from other teams, including several Serie A clubs. Although this summer, no such interest came from Club Brugge, the Bruges side have been interested in the striker in the past.

โ€œThere were indeed two contacts with Club,โ€ Dessers told Het Laatste Nieuws. โ€œOnce when Leko was manager there, and the last time when I was playing for Cremonese. But that interest never materialised.โ€

In Belgium, Dessers previously played for KRC Genk, Oud-Heverlee Leuven, and Lokeren. Returning to Belgium at some point is certainly not out of the question. โ€œWhy not? Itโ€™s still too early anyway, but Iโ€™ve been living abroad for quite a while, and I recently bought a house in Mechelen. There are a few Belgian teams Iโ€™m particularly fond of.โ€

KV Mechelen may be one of those sides, as fans have seemed eager for the strikerโ€™s arrival, having already spoken to him several times in the city. โ€œThey asked if I could come play for Malinwa,โ€ Dessers laughs. โ€œAnd I donโ€™t think my wife and in-laws would mind either. Although weโ€™ll have to see how that works out with my career.โ€

โ€œKV Mechelen is a fantastic club. And for the rest, I try to leave as many doors open as possible. You never know what a career will bring.โ€
