Rangers make move for FC Twente left-back Gijs Smal as the Dutchman holds off talks of a new deal in Enschede

According to Voetbal International, Rangers have approached FC Twente over a possible transfer for Gijs Smal. The 26-year-old left-back is entering the final year of his contract, and he seems to be steering clear of a new deal.

Gijs Smal has been a crucial player for Twente ever since he made the move to Enschede from FC Volendam back in 2020. Last season the Dutch defender featured 44 times across all competitions, providing eleven assists within those games. Smal has proven to be a solid defender for the Eredivisie outfit, and he’s keen to get high up the pitch and contribute at the other end. So far this season, the full-back has featured 13 times with Twente in third place.

Transfermarkt value Gijs Smal at €6m, and if the defender is keen to leave, Twente may well cash in this month. Rangers would be a suitable destination for the defender, as he’s only 26 and has plenty more potential. Smal would link up with Belgian boss Philippe Clement at Rangers.
