PSV’s Xavi Simons should prioritise his development over PSG return

PSV Eindhoven midfielder Xavi Simons has been urged to prioritise his development at his current club and avoid a lucrative move in the summer, Voetbal International reports

Former PSV head coach Jan Reker believes it would be a mistake for Simons to consider his options in the summer and believes his development at the Philips Stadion should continue for the foreseeable future.

At PSV, the new technical director Earnest Stewart and director of football Marcel Brands face important decisions for the future, but Reker also hopes that players will think about next season for themselves.

Reker, 74, admits it will not be easy for the club to keep Simons, 19, but believes the teenager should make the smart choice of staying where he is.

He said: “It won’t be easy, I expect, but if Xavi is smart he will choose his development.”

To make this harder for PSV Simons has a clause in his contract, which would make leaving PSV a little bit easier but Reker would rather not see that happen.

“He plays everything at PSV, he is adored here and he is still very young. You can see in everything that he has trained and played with very big players, but going back to PSG now is too early. Then he ends up on the bench there first,” he said

In the past, Reker was a youth, assistant and head coach at PSV and was the club’s general manager for a number of years. He hopes that Simons can be kept for the people of Eindhoven.
