According to reports from Voetbal Internationalโs Tom Knipping, PSV have ambitions to renovate the Philips Stadium. The Eindhoven club are believed to be struggling with the limited capacity of the venue, especially compared to competitors.
When analysing the possibility of revamping their home ground, itโs worth looking at how much money PSV have to play with, and also how much the stadium currently helps to make within the wider club income.
PSV reportedly earned over โฌ170 million in the past championship-winning season. The Champions Leagueโs revamped format and reaching the last 16 played a significant role, but revenue from season tickets, commercial sales, and merchandise also showed upward trends. That said, that total is still somewhat lower than the revenue Ajax generated in its Europa League season.
Ajax have a higher merchandise revenue, but the smaller capacity Philips Stadium still plays its own role. โWeโre reaching our limits,โ admits CFO Jaap van Baar. โThereโs no seat or skybox available. Thatโs great, but it also presents us with challenges. Thatโs why weโre also looking at expanding the stadium.โ
PSV have already discussed a feasibility study a year and a half ago. General Manager Marcel Brands says that more clarity on this should become available over the course of the season. โWe want to have a concrete answer in a few months. Whatโs possible and what the estimated cost will be.โ
