PSV interested in Waalwijk goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen as potential replacement for Joel Drommel

According to Eindhovens Dagblad, PSV are interested in RKC Waalwijk goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen. PSV are said to be searching for a new second-choice goalkeeper as Joel Drommel looks set to leave this summer.

Etienne Vaessen joined Waalwijk in 2015. The 27-year-old solidified his status as the clubs first choice goalkeeper during the 17/18 campaign. This season he’s featured 30 times in the Eredivisie keeping six clean sheets.

Joel Drommel is currently PSV’s second-choice shot-stopper. The 26-year-old has spent the last two seasons at the Philips Stadion, predominantly playing in cup games whilst Walter Benítez stands between the sticks during league games. Drommel played in goal during PSV’s KNVB Cup final victory over Ajax. Drommel saved one penalty as PSV went on to win the decisive shootout.

The former FC Twente goalkeeper could leave PSV this summer in search of regular game time, with the club potentially looking to loan him out. If Drommel does depart, Waalwijk’s Vaessen could be a solid replacement. He’s a less experienced goalkeeper than Drommel, which could mean he’d be more willing to be a backup option. Nevertheless, he’s had a super season under Joseph Oosting at Waalwijk, with the club currently sitting 9th in the league.
