PSV drop points for the first time this season after disappointing draw with Utrecht

Peter Bosz’s PSV have dropped points for the first time this season after being held to a 1-1 draw with Utrecht. The Eindhoven side had won all 17 of their Eredivisie matches up until Sunday’s clash.

Ron Jans’ Utrecht have been struggling this season. They’re currently 14th in the table with just four wins, but against PSV, they certainly didn’t look like a side down in the bottom half of the table.

PSV were the first side on the scoresheet, after a header from Johan Bakayoko found the back of the net within seven minutes. Chances came for both sides in the first half, but the league leaders were ahead at the interval.

Just minutes after the restart, some brilliant pressing from Utrecht paid off. Sergiño Dest was dispossessed before Othmane Boussaid found the back of the net from close range. The momentum was with Utrecht for much of the second half, as they registered 12 goal attempts in their search for a winner.

PSV also had their chances, but as tempers rose, the task of scoring a winner looked increasingly difficult. A strike from Hirving Lozano cannoned off the crossbar and several crosses were swung in towards Luuk de Jong, but PSV were unable to claim all three points.

Overall, a brilliant performance from Utrecht, who are now five points clear of the drop zone, but a poor performance from PSV, who had scored 14 goals within their previous five league games before today. Peter Bosz’s side are still 12 points clear at the top of the table as it stands. Next week, they face Feyenoord in the KNVB Cup round of 16.
