PSV continue winning form with victory over Lens in the Champions League

On Wednesday evening PSV Eindhoven hosted Lens in their fourth Champions League game of the competition, going into the round of games PSV were third in their group as and without a win thus far in the competition. When the two teams met in Lens a fortnight ago the points were shared during a 1-1 draw, whereby the events off the field took more of the headlines than the game iteself.

The game started well for PSV, striker and top scorer Luuk de Jong was able to get himself on the scoresheet after just 12 minutes following an assist from Johan Bakayoko. The hosts were dominant in the first-half and it was clear from the number of yellow cards that Lens received in the first 45 that PSV were frustrating the French team. In the second half both teams had chances, a number of chances fell to PSV’s Hirving Lozano but he was unable to capitalise on the opportunities, with just minutes to go Lens’s El Aynaoui took a shot from close range but the ball bounced back off the post, inches from taking away the three points for PSV. Morgan Guilavogui was substituted on for Lens in the 78th minute however the Guinean was unable to stay on the pitch for the whole game as he picked up two yellow cards in the space of 15 minutes. The game ended 1-0 to PSV after 96 minutes.

This result leaves PSV in second position in their group with five points, Arsenal are top of the group with nine, while Sevilla are bottom with only two points, Lens also have five points after four games but sit bellow PSV due to PSV’s superior goal difference. PSV will come up against Sevilla in their next game in the Champions League on the 29th of November, a win against the team at the bottom of the league would certainly help their chances of progressing in the competition.
