Court of Appeal unforgiving: Promes to remain in custody due to risk of flight

As per VoetbalPrimeur, the Amsterdam Court of Appeal has decided that Quincy Promes will remain in custody pending his appeal. The 33-year-old attacker is said to be a โ€˜flight riskโ€™.

Promes is accused of having previously left for a country that does not have an extradition treaty with the Netherlands. Moreover, the 50-time international would still like to play abroad, as he has indicated several times in interviews. The authorities believe he might, again, leave without permission.

The winger is suspected of acts that could carry a minimum prison sentence of 12 years. Only under very strict conditions may an appeal be made. Currently, he does not meet these requirements, and his pre-trial detention has therefore been extended. The case is currently in the preparatory phase, and an appeal will not be heard until 2026. A precise date has not yet been set.

Promes is also suspected of cocaine smuggling and stabbing his cousin. The court previously sentenced him to a total of 7.5 years in prison. Promes was arrested in Dubai last month and extradited to the Netherlands.

He had hoped to be allowed to await the appeal in freedom during a pro forma hearing on Tuesday. According to his lawyer, there was already a letter of intent from two clubs that wanted to sign him in that case. However, this is now off the table.
