Plymouth Argyle sign Spanish defender Julio Pleguezuelo from FC Twente

Plymouth Argyle have completed the signing of Julio Pleguezuelo from FC Twente. The 26-year-old centre-back has become Plymouth’s first summer signing off the back of their promotion to the Championship. Pleguezuelo turned down the opportunity to stay in the Eredivisie with FC Twente. He’s now signed a two-year contract with Argyle and has become their first-ever Spanish player.

Last season Pleguezuelo featured 30 times in all competitions as Twente finished 5th in the Eredivisie and qualified for the Europa Conference via the playoffs. The Spaniard kicked off his career in Arsenal’s academy, where he captained the U21 side. Julio Pleguezuelo has also experienced two loan spells in Spain with Mallorca and Gimnastic. Pleguezuelo is a centre-back who can also play as a right-back or defensive midfielder.

Speaking about the signing, Plymouth Argyle manager Steven Schumacher said ‘I am delighted that Julio has become our first signing of the summer. He joins us with good pedigree behind him having been a regular starter in the Eredivisie over the last few seasons at FC Twente and also coming through the ranks on English soil at Arsenal.’

Steven Schumacher, who guided Argyle to the League One title last season added ‘Julio is a versatile defender who is excellent with the ball at his feet and will fit into the style of play we try to play perfectly. He had many other options in this country and abroad for his services, but the chance to come back to England and prove himself in the Championship with Argyle really appealed to him and we’re delighted to have him onboard.’
