Pierre van Hooijdonk calls for Ajax to change formation against Napoli

Pierre van Hooijdonk has called for Ajax to change their formation for their Champions League match away to Napoli.

The Eredivisie champions are in need of a good result after being humiliated by the Italian side on home turf, losing 6-1.

That wasn’t their only poor result in recent times with them also losing to AZ, drawing to Go Ahead Eagles and only just beating Volendam.

To turn things around, Van Hooijdonk has called on Alfred Schreuder to change from a 4-3-3 to a 5-3-2 formation, with Edson Alvarez moving into defence, Davy Klaassen coming in and Steven Berghuis playing as a number 10 behind Mohammed Kudus and Steven Bergwijn.

I would really like Schreuder to do it. In my view, that would be very powerful,” he said on NOS’s Studio Voetbal.

The romantics of the Dutch school are the boss in Amsterdam in particular – ‘Ajax should always play 4-3-3’ – but times change and football evolves too. Then you have to play maybe in a different form.

“I do not rule out that Ajax can still go far internationally if they continue to play 4-3-3. They should not always play like that, but maybe occasionally.”
