Permutations for Euro 2024 Group E as Belgium look to overcome Ukraine

When the draw for Euro 2024 was made, not many would have seen Group E as being one of the most exciting. However, with one game to go, all sides are level on three points and have a chance to make it through to the next round. For Belgium, they were expected to win the group but are now relying on results elsewhere to finish in first place.

Even if they do beat Ukraine this evening, they need Romania to beat Slovakia as well. If the sides finish level on points, Slovakia would take first place because of the win on the opening day of the group. As the next round begins to take shape, if Belgium want to avoid the perceived stronger side of the draw they need to win the group. Rather than then be on the side of France, Portugal, Spain and Germany, they would join Austria and England in what is shaping up to be the weaker side of the draw. Their opponents would then be either the Netherlands or Slovenia, and a clash with their neighbours would be one that many neutrals would love to see.

Should Belgium lose and Romania lose, depending on goals scored the side would then finish third. This is certainly a tougher spot to be in, as they are in with a chance of facing Spain or England.

Many still expect that Belgium will win the group, but that defeat to Slovakia to start the campaign as really ramped up the pressure. Ukraine looked much improved in the second-half of their clash with Slovakia and will certainly be giving everything to get themselves through to the next round as well.
