Perfect timing? Oskar Zawadaโ€™s brace to take down Ajax could help get FC Groningen back on track

Oskar Zawadaโ€™s summer move to FC Groningen from RKC Waalwijk hasnโ€™t gone as well as either he or the player would have hoped. Prior to the sides clash with Ajax in the Eredivisie this weekend, the striker had scored just once and had spent most of his time coming off of the bench. He once again come off the bench this weekend, but finally made a big impact. Zawada helped himself to a brace to take down Ajax and put an end to a torrid run of form for FC Groningen.

After a great start to the season, FC Groningen were looking at a finish in the European play-offs. Yet a terrible run of form had seen them drop out of the top eight. Yet, with a win against Ajax, could the side from the north of the Netherlands be set for a late surge into the play-offs?

Zawada could be the key to this. The striker looked to have taken some real confidence from his brace this weekend and that may well translate into more goals and more points for the side. Zawada had been garnered interest in the past from teams in England, and even in January other clubs struggling in the Eredivisie were hoping to take him on loan until the end of the campaign.

However, Zawada remained with FC Groningen and this weekend that decision was certainly vindicated. His first goal was well taken, and the relief on his face was clear for all to see. The former Wellington Pheonix man had given Groningen the lead with his first, and his second was a well taken header to put FC Groningen in full control of the game. One area of concern for FC Groningen fans is that Zawada did not see out the game, having to go off injured after his second goal.

Ajax were unable to come back, with the defeat leading to a change of head coach in Amsterdam.
