PEC Zwolle in danger of getting sucked into relegation battle after six games without a win

PEC Zwolle lost their third game in their past six on Saturday after a 3-1 defeat away to Fortuna Sittard. The side’s last win came at the beginning of February in a 2-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam. At that point, the side were doing reasonably well, having gone five unbeaten with two wins and three draws. However, the tight nature of the Eredivisie this season means that any slip ups in form can change the situation drastically. After the defeat in Sittard, the side are only six points above the relegation play-off spot.

Zwolle only returned to the Eredivisie from a very brief hiatus in the Dutch second tier this season. After relegation in 2021/2022, the side immediately bounced back last campaign. This recent run has seen them slip away from a potential top eight space to looking over their shoulder. Thankfully, sides like Excelsior are on a worse run of form than themselves, but the side will need to turn things around soon.

Fortuna Sittard were good value for their win at the weekend. They had 22 shots, 12 of which were on target and finished with an xG of 2.32. Zwolle on the other hand ended with more possession but only 0.28 xG. Kaj Sierhuis continued his fine form with another goal, while Justin Lonwijk and Alessio Da Cruz made it three. Zwolle’s consolation goal came in the 93rd minute with top scorer Lennart Thy grabbing his 10th in 24 games.
