Otto Addo hits back at media after criticism over Mohammed Kudus substitution

Otto Addo has hit back at the media who were critical of his decision to substitute Ajax star Mohamed Kudus during the 3-2 defeat to Portugal in the Black Star’s opening match of the 2022 World Cup. Kudus was part of the double substitution that saw Andrew Ayew also replaced, with brother Jordan Ayew and Osman Bukari coming on. Bukari managed to pull one back for the Black Stars, however Inaki Williams missed a glorious chance in the closing minutes to give Ghana a deserved draw. Many in the media were critical of the decision to remove Kudus with the side trailing.

Speaking ahead of the match with South Korea, and as reported by Ghannasoccernet, Addo said “With all due respect but some never played football, and some didn’t do the job. In the job as a coach, you have to be really into it to know and understand a lot of things”.

Ghana more than likely have to avoid defeat against South Korea to keep themselves in the competition, with their opponents having drawn their opening game with Uruguay. Ghana finish the group stages with a replay of the infamous 2010 World Cup fixture against Uruguay, in which Luiz Suarez became a villain in the eyes of many Black Stars fans.
