OH Leuven can ill afford to lose former Fulham Academy prospect in January

Since signing for OH Leuven back in the summer of 2022, Icelandic midfielder Jón Thorsteinsson has established himself as arguably the sides best player. For a club that has missed far more than it has hit on transfers, the signing of the 25-year-old from Danish side AGF Aarhus was a masterstroke. Once of the Fulham Academy, the midfielder never made an appearance for the Premier League side. He spent time on loan with Vendsyssel FF before joining AGF Aarhus permanently in July of 2019. He scored 20 goals in 99 games for the club.

Last season, Thorsteinsson played 31 times for the side in a variety of positions, either outside or as an advanced midfielder. He scored 12 goals and provided three assists. He has continued that form this season, despite the struggles of the side. In 18 matches for the club he has started 14, with three goals and four assists. He leads the side in both categories. OH Leuven will have to hope that these numbers have not attracted other clubs to try and poach him from the relegation threatened side.

With a contract until 2025, it certainly makes sense for OH Leuven to keep hold of the Icelandic international, as without him their chances of survival would certainly decline. He leads the side in both goals and assists and his versatility has been an asset in allowing for more tactical flexibility. This aspect of his game should certainly attract other clubs, especially in Belgium where he has showcased his talents. Overall, Thorsteinsson has 15 goals and eight assists for OH Leuven.

OH Leuven are expected to be active in the winter window, with a number of incomings needed. They will probably also look to shift some players who are surplus to requirements. They will hope that come the end of the window, Thorsteinsson is still their number seven.
