West Ham have officially announced the signing of Edson Álvarez from Ajax. The Premier League side will pay up to €41m for the 25-year-old Mexican midfielder. Álvarez has become the Hammers’ first summer signing.
Edson Álvarez has been in the interest of West Ham for months and finally, they’ve completed the signing. After selling Declan Rice to Arsenal for a club-record fee of £105m, the Hammers have been searching for a suitable replacement. Edson Álvarez was their top target, along with Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse, and that signing is set to be completed tomorrow according to Sky Sports.
Edson Álvarez can play as a defensive midfielder or as a centre-back. Last season the 69-time Mexico international featured 44 times in all competitions for Ajax, who finished the Eredivisie campaign in third place. He joined the Dutch giants from Club América in the summer of 2019 and has been one of their standout players ever since he joined. This could turn out to be an excellent addition for West Ham, who kick off their Premier League campaign with an away clash against Bournemouth this Saturday.
