Official: Steven Bergwijn leaves Ajax for Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad in €21m move

Al-Ittihad have officially announced the last-gasp signing of Steven Bergwijn from Ajax. The Saudi Pro League side made a move on Monday, which resulted in the 26-year-old putting pen to paper on a permanent contract. At Al-Ittihad, Bergwijn will link-up with the likes of Karim Benzema, Fabinho and N’Golo Kanté. Ajax will receive over €21m for the transfer.

Steven Bergwijn has spent the last two seasons at Ajax after the Amsterdam club spent €31m on his services from Tottenham Hotspur. The Netherlands international still stands as Ajax’s record signing, and his 41 goal contributions in 80 appearances may have made him worth every penny.

Now the winger will embark on an adventure in the Middle East. Ajax’s technical director Alex Kroes told the club website: ‘Steven and Ajax have made no secret of the fact that, if a good offer came from abroad, he would make the move. That has now happened at the last minute, giving the club the necessary financial flexibility to hopefully bring in a suitable replacement in the short term. We have wished our captain from last season much success in the next stage of his career.
