No Italian favour means Genk crash out of Europa Conference League despite losing just one group game

Genk were left to wonder what could have been after they crashed out of the Europa Conference League at the group stages. In six matches they only lost one, but the three draws proved costly as they finished third behind Fiorentina and Ferencvaros. Going into the final group game, the side knew that they had to win and hope that the Italian side won in Hungary.

Genk did their job, running out 2-0 winners at home against Serbia’s Cukaricki, with goals from Bryan Heynen and Joseph Paintsil. Ironically, it was these two who scored in the reverse fixture that also finished 2-0. Genk had to play the majority of the game with 10 mean after Matias Galarza was sent off in the first-half.

Over in Hungary the home side took the lead just after half time thanks to former Rosenberg attacking midfielder Kristoffer Zachariassen. Fiorentina did manage to equalise with just over 10 minutes to go through Luca Ranieri. However, they were unable to find the second goal that Genk needed. The side will now be able to focus on domestic affairs when they face bottom side Kortrijk on Sunday afternoon.
