No imminent Ajax return for Erik Ten Hag after talks with Alex Kroes

As reported by ESPN, Ajax director had a conversation with former head coach Erik ten Hag earlier this week. However, a return to the club does not seem imminent. Even if head coach Jonny Heitinga would be sacked in the near future, it is unlikely that the former Manchester United and short lived Bayer Leverkusen head coach will be returning to Ajax to take up the vacancy.

Clearly, a reunion would be welcome by most. During his time at Ajax, ten Hag had the club playing entertaining football, developed young players and made the Dutch side competitive in European football. Since leaving for Manchester United, neither ten Hag nor Ajax have had much success. However, there is also the question of whether a reunion between Ajax and their former head coach would be wise. Trying to replicate the past success would always be difficult.

Yet Heitinga is certainly under pressure. The side remain winless in the Champions League after another defeat last night, this time at the hands of Victor Osimhen and Galatasaray. Domestically, Ajax under Heitinga are already eight points off the top of the table, despite only suffering one defeat in 11 games. It has been the five draws that have caused them to fall so far behind.
