New Twente boss Van den Brom clear amidst contract quandary: โ€œIโ€™m not allowed to field Mees Hilgersโ€

The arrival of John van den Brom at Twente hasnโ€™t changed Mees Hilgersโ€™ prospects amidst his contract scenario.

The Indonesian internationalโ€™s contract expires after this season, and both the club and player aimed for a transfer this summer, yet that didnโ€™t materialise. As per VIโ€™s Geert-Jan Jakobsโ€™ report, Hilgers is still not in the squad and that will remain the case. โ€œAt this moment, Iโ€™m not allowed to field Mees Hilgers.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ve made good internal agreements about that. Iโ€™m adhering to them. The moment I hear from Jan (Streuer, technical director) that I can field him, heโ€™s an option for me.โ€

Streuer previously stated that Hilgers will no longer be eligible for playing time at FC Twente until heโ€™s willing to sign a new contract. โ€œMeesโ€™ intention was that he might want to leave after so many years at the club,โ€ the technical director explained. โ€œI can certainly imagine that you have that ambition. We said: Weโ€™re not going to wait until heโ€™s gone, weโ€™re going to bring in two central defenders.โ€

โ€œRobin Prรถpper and Stav Lemkin have arrived. Hilgers hasnโ€™t left. Weโ€™re currently in talks with him, and we hope to have clarity soon. We donโ€™t want to shortchange players weโ€™ve invested in by not letting them play. And we do want to let a player whose contract is expiring and who might want to leave play. Thatโ€™s a clear choice, and weโ€™ve communicated that to the players.โ€

โ€œ(Although this is the situation) If Hilgers extends his contract, heโ€™ll be part of the team again. If not, weโ€™ll give preference to players weโ€™ve invested in and who still have longer contracts.โ€
