The arrival of John van den Brom at Twente hasnโt changed Mees Hilgersโ prospects amidst his contract scenario.
The Indonesian internationalโs contract expires after this season, and both the club and player aimed for a transfer this summer, yet that didnโt materialise. As per VIโs Geert-Jan Jakobsโ report, Hilgers is still not in the squad and that will remain the case. โAt this moment, Iโm not allowed to field Mees Hilgers.โ
โWeโve made good internal agreements about that. Iโm adhering to them. The moment I hear from Jan (Streuer, technical director) that I can field him, heโs an option for me.โ
Streuer previously stated that Hilgers will no longer be eligible for playing time at FC Twente until heโs willing to sign a new contract. โMeesโ intention was that he might want to leave after so many years at the club,โ the technical director explained. โI can certainly imagine that you have that ambition. We said: Weโre not going to wait until heโs gone, weโre going to bring in two central defenders.โ
โRobin Prรถpper and Stav Lemkin have arrived. Hilgers hasnโt left. Weโre currently in talks with him, and we hope to have clarity soon. We donโt want to shortchange players weโve invested in by not letting them play. And we do want to let a player whose contract is expiring and who might want to leave play. Thatโs a clear choice, and weโve communicated that to the players.โ
โ(Although this is the situation) If Hilgers extends his contract, heโll be part of the team again. If not, weโll give preference to players weโve invested in and who still have longer contracts.โ
