Netherlands given Matthijs de Ligt injury boost ahead of World Cup

Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt joined his teammates in his first team training session for the Bundesliga side since suffering a knee injury, nos.nl reports.

De Ligt, who joined Munich in the summer from Serie A side Juventus, spoke to German media outlet BILD to say his knee is “fine” as he looks to return to full fitness.

The news will be warmly welcomed by Oranje head coach Louis van Gaal, who is yet to name is World Cup squad after of their trip to Qatar.

Former Ajax captain De Ligt suffered the knee injury back in late October against Mainz which Julian Nagelsmann’s side won 6-2.

It was later revealed the Dutch international suffered a slight strain to his knee ligaments and suffered a setback in his recovery just last week but it now seems centre-back is heading in the right direction just before the World Cup kicks off.

The Netherlands open their Group A campaign against Senegal.
