More problems for Koeman with injured Van de Ven

Oranje national team manager Ronald Koeman has to deal with another injury set-back for the upcoming international matches as Micky van de Ven suffered a hamstring injury during Tottenham’s game against Chelsea on Monday evening. The game was prime Premier League football, end to end, free flowing football that left the viewers at the edge of their seat throughout. While the game was littered with chances, the injury to Van de Ven in the 45th minute went somewhat under the radar during all the commotion. The Dutchman, who made the switch from VfL Wolfsburg last summer, has become an undisputed starter for new manager Ange Postecoglou during their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Van de Ven appeared to suffer a torn hamstring as he was seen pulling up and immediately screaming in pain as he went to challenge for the ball. The defender was replaced immediately, and after the match Postecoglou was asked about the injury, to which he replied by saying: ‘it is too early to say anthing about it, but when we look at Micky, we think it’s a significant injury. We assume he will be out for a while.’

The injury to the centre-back comes a week after fellow Dutchman Matthijs de Ligt was stretchered off during a DFB-Pokal game for Bayern Munich. This leaves somewhat of an issue for Ronald Koeman for the upcoming international games against Ireland and Gibraltar in the coming weeks. The national team manager will still be able to call upon captain Virgil van Dijk, Manchester City mainstay Nathan Ake, and Stefan de Vrij but the injuries to De Ligt and Van de Ven limits Koeman’s ability to try and test out different defensive options ahead of next years European Championships.
