Eyebrows were certainly raised in January when it was announced that veteran striker Andre Ayew would be joining NAC Breda in the Eredivisie. He was set to link up with fellow Black Stars players Kamal Sowah and Denis Odoi in a bid to help the side avoid relegation from the Eredivisie. Until this weekend, both Sowah and Ayew had been waiting for their first goals for the club, with Sowah having been with NAC Breda since February of last season.
Both found the net for NAC Breda at home to Feyenoord, but sadly for the Ghanaian pair, the side were unable to hold on with the game ending 3-3. With things getting tight at the bottom, three points at home against a Feyenoord side chasing a top two finish would have given the club a huge boost going into the final games of the season. While the point moves them five clear of bottom of the table Heracles, they are still six points adrift of certain safety.
Just ahead of them in the standings are Telstar, who occupy the relegation play-off spot. Telstar themselves had a great weekend, smashing Fortuna Sittard 4-1 away from home. Telstar had also beaten NAC Breda 3-0 just a few weeks ago to really give their chances of survival a boost. Not many predicated that the club, who shocked many with their promotion last season, would have much of a chance of avoiding the drop.
For NAC Breda fans, they will be hoping that both Sowah and Ayew can kick on now until the end of the season. The Ghanaian duo could really help the side go on a run if they can start to find the net consistently. For Sowah, he has struggled to really find the form he showed many seasons ago for OH Leuven. Hopefully this first goal for NAC Breda will give him renewed confidence.
