Mission accomplished: FC Volendam secure promotion back to the Eredivisie at first attempt

It’s official, FC Volendam are an Eredivisie club once again. The Palingboeren secured promotion back to the top flight with a 1-0 win over Jong AZ on Monday night. It also extended their remarkable winning run to nine games in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie – their longest streak in 65 years.

With just four games left in the season and third-placed ADO Den Haag sitting on 63 points, Volendam needed one more victory to reach 76 points and secure a record-breaking eleventh promotion. Spurred on by 750 travelling supporters in Alkmaar, it was midfielder Alex Plat who stepped up, scoring the decisive goal in the 64th minute to seal the win and promotion for Volendam.

Rick Kruys‘ side have showcased their dominance all season in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, led by the league’s most dangerous attacking trio – Henk Veerman (22 goals), Robert Mühren (17) and Bilal Ould-Chikh, who tops the assist charts with 17.

With Volendam on the verge of winning the title, second place (the last automatic promotion spot) is still well and truly up for grabs. Excelsior currently occupy that spot on 65 points but ADO Den Haag (63), Dordrecht (62) and Cambuur (61) are all breathing down their neck. It’s all to play for heading into the final four games of the season.
