Dries Mertens has kept fans of Napoli on their toes recently after leaving Galatasaray, hinting that heโd be open to an Italian return.
VoetbalPrimeur suggests that the winger could return, having recently being named an honorary citizen of Naples. In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, he hinted that he could continue as a football player for one more season, possibly with Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku:
โFirst of all, I want to rest a bit. Secondly: I want to be a better father. Thirdly: I might want to continue playing football, maybe hereโฆโ
โI have not thought about it seriously, now I want to take some time to think. But you should never say never.โ
Realistically, continuing to play as he pushes 40 seems unlikely. โI am thinking about hanging up my boots,โ said Mertens.
That does not mean that he is turning his back on football, though. โThe idea of โโreturning to Napoli in a different role does fascinate me.โ
