Joining the exclusive 50 club: Memphis equals Van Persieโ€™s scoring record for the Dutch national team

Memphis Depay officially drew level with Robin van Persie as the Dutch national teamโ€˜s all-time top scorer yesterday. The 31-year-old striker scored two goals in the romping 8-0 World Cup qualifier win over Malta, bringing his total to 50 goals.

Memphis had already scored once against Finland last Saturday, bringing his total to 48 goals and leaving him needing just two more to equal Van Persie. The wait wouldnโ€™t last long, however, as the Corinthians striker was at the double on Tuesday night against Malta to hit the landmark.

Intriguingly, the former PSV, Manchester United, Lyon, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid man achieved the feat in the exact same number of international appearances.

Memphis scored his first goal for the Dutch national team nearly 11 years ago to the week, on June 18, 2014, at the World Cup in Brazil. His first strike for the Oranje was a winning one, as Louis van Gaalโ€™s side prevailed 2-3 against a determined Australia side in Porto Alegre.
