Media lament Ajax despite win over Telstar: โ€œplay is worse under Heitinga than under Farioliโ€

Ajax beat Telstar 2-0 on Sunday in the first round of the Eredivisie. However, John Heitinga was met with widespread criticism afterwards. Pundit Valentijn Driessen is less than impressed with the new head coach in Amsterdam.

Driessen expressed his displeasure with Heitingaโ€™s choices in a video segment for De Telegraaf. โ€œWhatโ€™s incomprehensibleโ€ฆ Moro played for the Spanish U21s at the European Championship. An excellent right winger, but who always plays as a left winger for Ajax. Which is why heโ€™s keeping Mika Godts in the locker room.โ€

The Eredivisie observer continued, โ€œGodts is one of the great talents from our own academy. He did quite well last year, and you have to give him time to develop further. He will then sit on the bench next to Gloukh, who also played as a left winger at RB Salzburg and came on as a midfielder against Telstar.โ€

Driessen believes Ajax havenโ€™t really improved footballing performance with the arrival of Heitinga. โ€œUnder Farioli, the game was awful. And now itโ€™s even worse. Itโ€™s the same as the game before Farioli. Itโ€™s a complete mess.

โ€œTheyโ€™ve been buying into certain positions, so you think theyโ€™ll benefit from that. Itakura, who didnโ€™t play against Telstar, is being portrayed as a kind of hero. But a lot of Ajax players are suddenly being lifted up. Our friend Gloukh, too, was the new saviour. And Youri Regeer is simply not a right-back. Itโ€™s just nonsense to put that guy there. Heโ€™s a midfielder. And if he doesnโ€™t fit in there, you should just bench him.โ€
