Mechelen’s Samuel Gouet puts in solid all round display for Cameroon as side narrowly lose to Switzerland

KV Mechelen’s central midfielder Samuel Gouet played the full 90 minutes in his sides opening game of the 2022 World Cup. Gouet has been a regular for the national side this season, which is in contrast to his domestic form where he has only made 9 appearances, which includes just three starts.

Gouet started the warm-up match against Panama and was once again relied on to anchor the Cameroonian midfield alongside Martin Hongla and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa. The Malinwa midfielder completed 48 of his 52 passes, an impressive 92% passing accuracy accoding to FotMob. He also completed his defensive job well, recovering the ball 10 times for his side.

Cameroon lost the game 1-0 thanks to a Breel Embolo goal just after half-time. The West African side will face Serbia in their next match, which may well be considered a must win given they will finish their group campaign against favourites Brazil.
