Mechelen’s injury hit season will continue this Friday against Genk. As reported by Jordi De Koninck, Lucas Bijker, Jordi Vanlerberghe, Boli Bolingoli and Sandy Waslh are all out injured, while midfielders Rob Schoofs and Birger Verstraete are suspended. This has meant that Steven Defour has recalled Dries Wouters and Iebe Swers from their banishment to the second team as cover.
The side may also be about to lose another player, with striker Gustav Engvall working with the club to engineer a transfer. The 26-year-old Swedish forward spent half of last season on loan with Norwegian side Sarpsborg. He made 13 appearances for the Eliteserien side, scoring once and providing three assists. Despite Mechelen struggling for a goal scorer, Engvall has seen limited chances for minutes since returning from Norway.
Mechelen’s recent lost to Eupen inside the last five minutes has pulled them back into the relegation battle. However, they are also through to the semi-finals of the domestic cup.
