Matthijs de Ligt was stretchered off in Bayern Munich’s DFB-Pokal match vs Saarbrücken on Wednesday evening. The Dutch International was replaced in the 24th minute by Konrad Laimer after a perceived injury to his right knee. German newspaper BILD reported that the centre-back has suffered a MCL injury and capsule damage to his right-knee that will keep him sidelined for 4-6 weeks.
This comes at a difficult time for Bayern Munich as the only fully fit defender in the team is new signing Kim Min-jae, with Dayot Upamecano returning from injury on Monday it is unlikely that he is fully fit for their game against rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Manager Thomas Tuchel will also be without the important Joshua Kimmich after the German was sent off after 4 minutes during their 8-0 win over Darmstadt over the weekend.
It is yet to be seen the implications of De Ligt’s injury for Bayern Munich and the Dutch national team, it is likely that the defender will miss the Netherlands games against Ireland and Gibraltar in mid-November. As for Bayern Munich, there are rumours linking a return for former Bayern defender Jérôme Boateng on a short-term deal to cover for the lack of cover in defence for the team from Bavaria.
