Marseille keen on former Leeds United and West Ham target who is set to leave Anderlecht this summer

Foot01 are reporting that Olympique de Marseille are interested in signing Mario Stroeykens. The DR Congo international signed a new deal with Anderlecht last summer with the promise that he could leave the club this summer, with a release clause reportedly around โ‚ฌ12m. However, while Stroeykens burst onto the scene at Anderlecht, injuries have really hampered him in recent seasons. Once a target of both West Ham and Leeds United, Stroeykens is seen as less of a sure prospect as he did a few seasons ago.

However, there is still a talented player there, and Marseille would likely try and sign the 21-year-old attacker for less than the sell on clause. Anderlecht are likely to agree to a deal that may be under the release clause given that injuries have restricted Stroeykens to just four starts in the Belgian Pro League this season. Back in the 2022/2023 season he managed 41 appearances with five goals, while the season after he went on to score six goals in 40, with six assists. Last season he played 39 games, scoring five goals and providing six assists. So far this season, those four starts have been part of the 26 games Stroeykens has played for Anderlecht, with just one goal scored.

Marseille will clearly be hoping that Stroeykens injury concerns are now fully behind him and, given he is only 21, there is a chance he will develop into the player many hoped he would just a few seasons ago.
