Mark van Bommel mindful of first season collapse at PSV as Antwerp continue perfect start

Antwerp have continued their perfect start to the Pro League season but Mark van Bommel isn’t getting carried away, remembering how PSV were beaten to the Eredivisie title by Ajax after making such a start in his first season there.

While the Belgian side suffered disappointment in Europe, losing their Conference League play-off, things couldn’t have gone any better domestically with Van Bommel leading them to eight wins in their eight matches of the Pro League campaign.

As a result, they have a lead of five points at the top of the table and are already expected by many to go on and win the title now.

However, given that he won the first 13 league games of the season when he took over as PSV manager and was still beaten to the title by Ajax, he’s not getting carried away.

“Such a start is no guarantee. I experienced it before. If you look back at my past, you will know that,” he told Het Nieuwsblad.

“So we’re not going to relax now, that’s not in this team. We will still experience situations in which we will lose. Then we have to continue on the same path and with the same way of playing as where we started.

“We have to have that confidence.”
