Mark Van Bommel believes Toby Alderweireld can continue playing for the Red Devils

In an interview with GVA, Antwerp coach Mark Van Bommel said he believes that Toby Alderweireld should still consider not retiring from international football. Van Bommel said “Whether I will recommend Toby to continue as an international? He must now, in full disillusionment, not make a hasty decision. If he reaches the level in Qatar, he can certainly still play”.

Many believed that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar would be the final tournament for Alderweireld and others of the golden generation, and with Eden Hazard announcing his retirement at the age of 31, it is expected that the 33 year old former Tottenham defender will follow suit.

Alderweireld joined Antwerp in the summer, alongside Mark Van Bommel, as part of a potential title challenge from the Great Old. Despite an unbeaten start to the season, Antwerp struggled for consistency before the break for the World Cup. They are currently in third place, 11 points behind leaders Genk with just one win in their last five matches. Their first game back after the tournament will be at home to Standard Liege in the cup.
