Marc Overmars rejects Ajax return

There will be no Ajax return for former sporting Director Marc Overmars. As reported by De Telegraaf, the current Sporting Director at Antwerp will be remaining in Belgium and not returning to a club where he made a name for himself in that role. Overmars was sacked by Ajax a few seasons ago due to inappropriate behaviour towards a female colleague. Before the dust had even settled on the case against Overmars at Ajax Antwerp had appointed the former Barcelona and Arsenal man as their Sporting Director.

That a club the size of Ajax cannot tempt Overmars to leave an Antwerp side that are struggling may well be of concern. However, Overmars past misdemeanors during his time in Amsterdam may also play a role in his decision to remain in Belgium. However, he is under pressure this season as the side he has put together has struggled on the pitch. The club have lost key players for big money, but have been unable to reinvest all of this income due to needing to cover the costs of not having qualified for European football. Overmars has not quite shown the same level of nous as he has in the past so far with working to a much more restrictive budget.

There is mounting pressure now on the Ajax decision makers to put things in place that can set the club back on track. Since the departure of both Overmars and Erik ten Hag the side has lurched from one coach to another without finding much success. Ajax are currently adrift of both PSV and Feyenoord in the Eredivisie and sit rock bottom of the Champions League after a dismal European campaign so far.
