Marc Overmars recovering well after stroke

Antwerp have announced that their director of football, Marc Overmars, is recovering well after suffering a mini stroke on the 29th of December. After feeling unwell, the former Ajax player was admitted to hospital where he received treatment. The club have said that Overmars will now take time off to recover.

Overmars joined Antwerp after a controversial exit from Ajax in 2022, with many Antwerp fans and others criticising the decision by the Belgian club to bring the former Barcelona midfielder in after only a short period of time since his dismissal. Under Overmars, the Great Old brought in Mark Van Bommel as head coach, as well as Belgian international Toby Alderweireld as club captain.

Following an unbeaten start to the season, the club have struggled for consistency on the pitch. Since losing to Kortrijk in October, Van Bommel’s side have not been able to string together a series of positive performances. This has led to comparisons between Antwerp and the PSV Eindhoven side that Van Bommel managed, who started in similar fashion before dramatically falling away as the season continued.

The club have recently been linked with Overmars former player Daley Blind.
