Major career decision looming for former Leicester City and Aston Villa defender at Antwerp

As reported by HLN, Antwerp defender Ritchie De Laet is fast approaching the end of his contract and a major decision on his future. The 35-year-old former Leicester City and Aston Villa defender’s current contract expires at the end of the current season. De Laet faces three choices, he can either extend with Antwerp, who are willing to offer a one year deal with the idea that he will eventually transition into a coaching role. He may be able to leave, with other clubs interested, or he is also weighing up the option to retire.

Despite his age, De Laet has still been performing well for the Great Old. He has started 11 of the 12 Pro League games he has played this season, with one assist. In Europe, he has played three games, starting two. Despite having played for Manchester United and a host of clubs, this season saw De Laet play in the Champions League for the first time in his career.

Since joining Antwerp, De Laet has made 182 appearances and scored seven goals. This was more than he managed during his other longest spell at a club, which was between 2012 and 2016 when he played for Leicester.
