Maastricht see Belgian crowd favourite head to Spain

Romain Matthys is leaving MVV Maastricht after four years. The Belgian goalkeeper and De Geusselt crowd favourite is transferring to Castellón on a free, where he has signed a two-year contract.

As per Voetbal International, Matthys has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie since his arrival at MVV, although a transfer for the 26-year-old goalkeeper never materialised.

With his contract expiring this summer, a departure was inevitable. It now provides him with a great adventure in Spain, but a transfer fee for MVV is logically not in the cards.

There are still tow Dutchmen under contract at Dick Schreuders’ old club. Daijiro Chirino and Jozhua Vertrouwd remain at Castellón, while Jetro Willems left on a free transfer and Thomas van den Belt moved to FC Twente after his loan period in the Segunda División. Johan Plat has been head coach at the club since January.
